Article 15- 5/2/10

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local-beat/Teen-Messing-With-iPod-Drives-Jeep-Into-House-92508979.html

The article I chose to write about this week is titled “Teen Messing with iPod Drives Jeep Into House.” This article is about an 18 year old who was in Long Island and crashed into a house because he looked down to change his iPod to a new song. The article states that there is a thing called shuffle and this could have been avoided. What exactly happened was “The distracted East Islip teenager first slammed his 2005 Jeep into a parked car, then lost control and sped across a few lawns before hitting the house at about 11:30.” The car hit the front of the house all because of a technology tool called the iPod. He ran into a 80 year old lady’s house. The driver received minor injured and the woman was taken to the hospital just in case.

This article affects me in a huge way. It is so scary to see that this can happen from someone looking at his or her iPod. Technology is such a great thing for us to have, but it is scary to know that it can put many people in danger. I think people need to obey the laws and do not text and drive. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/08/29/scitech/pcanswer/main5274193.shtml stated, “A recently released study by the VirginiaTech Transportation Institute found that truck drivers who were texting were 23 times more at risk of a "crash or near crash event" than "nondistracted driving." This website stated “As per talking on a cell phone, the same study found no increased risk for truck drivers and 1.3 times the risk for car drivers.” These statistics blow my mind to know that texting or looking at an iPod can put someone in so much danger. Technology is definitively a great advancement, but it does have it’s downfalls. I 100% believe in not texting and driving.

http://www.nydailynews.com/money/2010/04/20/2010-04-20_ipad_touchscreen_production_could_be_causing_problem_as_overseas_debut_is_delaye.html

The article I am writing about this week is “iPad touchscreen production could be causing problem as overseas debut the delayed.” It is about apples newest release the Ipad. http://pambihira.net/blog/pambihirang-news/scrutinizing-the-apple-ipad-definition-price-size-features-release-date/ stated that an ipod is “A hybrid of Apple iPhone, Apple iTouch, and a full laptop notebook. You can play games, music, watch movies, browse the Internet, and use applications (but can’t make calls) with the touch screen.” The article has not released the iPad overseas because there is such a high demand for them that they do not have enough to send overseas. Apple did not expect the demand for the iPads to be so high, but they are planning on having a bigger supply of them in the next few weeks. They said that the decision was very difficult to decide because they knew it would set them back. Because of the high demands U.K., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland won’t be able to receive the iPad until the end of next month.

I believe that Apple did make the right choice on holding off on sending the iPads across seas, but I feel as though they should have had enough iPads to send out when they said they would. This does not affect me, but I know it affects everyone in U.K., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. The technology is so high in the United States that they should have been able to produce enough of these in a short amount of time. I am sure that Apple Stores will get a few harsh statements from across seas complaining about the delay of the iPad. I feel as though once they receive the iPad across seas that they will be very thrilled. I’m sure the wait will definitely will be worth its while.

Article 13- 4/18/10

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/194204/facebook_beefs_up_site_against_hackers.html

The article I chose this week is titled “Facebook Beefs up Site Against Hackers.” It is about Facebook employers who want to stop hackers from abusing their social-networking site. There are 400 million registered users who use facebook. Hackers are trying to affect as many of them as they can. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&defl=en&q=define:hacker&ei=7pvLS6vHPIPu9gTz_My6BA&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title&ved=0CAYQkAE stated that a hacker is “A programmer who breaks into computer systems in order to steal or change or destroy information as a form of cyber-terrorism.” Facebooks security has gone up very much. In 2005 there were only a few people working in the security section, but now as much as up to 10 perfect of their 1,200 employees are involved with the security of their website. Their main focus is to find out where the attack is coming from, not necessarily who is attacking them. The website stated, “Facebook has automated systems that detect when someone is using the site in a way that is different from the normal user.” Facebook is penalizing the hackers with $100 per spam message.
I believe what Facebook is doing is the right thing to do. I have personally experienced a message from someone whose account has been hacked. Usually they are links to a fake picture and once you click on the link your Facebook also gets hacked. The hackers are affecting many people. Not only is it annoying, but also it can mess up someone’s computer very much. If Facebook can figure out a way to stop these hackers then a lot of problems would be fixed. I hope that their employees can come up with a great new technology program that can block all hackers from messing with peoples Facebook. I also remember that Myspace had hackers and I believe that is one reason Myspace has disappeared in the computer world. Many people were aggravated with the amount of spam on the website.

Article 12- 4/11/10

http://chronicle.augusta.com/living/2010-04-08/3-d-tv-broadcasts-set-stage-more?v=1270730937

The article I am writing about this week is titled “3-D TV broadcasts set stage for more.” It is about Augusta National Golf Club, who has connections with IBM and Comcast. Augusta National Golf Club was the first organization to produce and broadcast a live event in 3-D. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_television stated, “A 3D television is a television that employs techniques of 3D presentation, such as stereoscopic capture, multi-view capture, or 2D plus depth, and a 3D display—a special viewing device to project a television program into a realistic three-dimensional field.” Their first 3-D live performance was on Wednesday at the Masters Tournament’s Annual Par-# Contest. The TV industry estimates that 1 million 3-D sets will be sold before the end of the year. The cost range for a 3-D television is $600-$800. This article stated, “The technology is based on two images, broadcast simultaneously and then matted together. The images shift, left to right, at about 125 cycles per second.” This causes the 3-D effect.

I believe that 3-D televisions are a great idea and a great technological advancement. I know that it will affect everyone in a huge way. Soon old televisions will be thrown away and 3-D ones will be bought all around the world. I think it will look silly with everyone wearing glasses while watching TV. The one concern I have is that I hope people do not become lazy. I hope that people still get out and go out because there is a definite possibility that people could relate 3-D TV to real life. Besides this one concern I think it is great that people are starting to create such great technology. I have never used a 3-D television myself, but I am sure these TV’s will be very popular in the near future like the article had stated.

Article 11- 4/4/10

http://www.mibz.com/9058-toyota-and-mazda-license-agreement-on-hybrid-technology.html

The article I chose this week is titled Toyota and Mazda – License Agreement on Hybrid technology. It is about Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Mazda Motor Corporation and hybrid cars. http://www.eartheasy.com/live_hybrid_cars.htm stated, “A hybrid car features a small fuel-efficient gas engine combined with an electric motor that assists the engine when accelerating. The electric motor is powered by batteries that recharge automatically while you drive.“ They have signed an agreement to combine the hybrid system with SKY (engines.) This agreement also allows them to produce a hybrid vehicle in Japan. They want to be on the market by 2013. Since the first hybrid car was released (1997) they have over 2.3 million hybrid cars delivered to customers in over 70 countries and regions. Mazda wants to lessen the fuel consumptions in vehicles by 30% by 2015. Their overall strategy is to “enhance the basic elements of its vehicles, including engines, transmissions and reducing weight, and then gradually add electrical components such as start-stop system, regenerative braking and hybrid systems.”

I believe that this is going to be a great step for hybrid cars. Many people are starting to use hybrid cars, so I think this will have a huge affect on them. With Mazda trying to reduce the fuel consumption by 30% will be a huge advancement because gas is so expensive these days. If we do not have to buy as much gas then that will have a huge effect on many people. I believe that hybrid cars save so much energy and are a lot better for the environment, so I am hoping that Mazda and Toyota can make this all happen. If Mazda and Toyota can sell vehicles over Japan then this will be a huge step for them because Japan is huge with the car industry.

http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20100328/BUSINESS/3280322/1003/4G+technology+won+t+be+the+norm+for+a+while

This article I chose is about cell phone carriers. These carriers are Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, Comcast, and Clearwire. These services are known as 4G. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G stated, “4G refers to the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards. It is a successor to 3G and 2G standards. The nomenclature of the generations generally refers to a change in the fundamental nature of the service.” These companies are promising faster speeds for their cell phones. They are going to be fast enough to replace wireless Internet. 4G will be releasing these new speeds in the next two years. The two most dominant services behind 4G are, Sprint and Clearwire, and Verizon and AT&T. Sprint and Clearwire are going to we using WiMax, which will have towers that will provide broadband access up to 30 miles. Verizon and AT&T will be using Long Term Evolution. This will have download speeds of 50 Mbps.

I believe this 4G will be a huge technology advancement for Sprint, At&T, Verizon, and Clearwire. I personally have sprint and I know that the service sometimes isn’t that great. I have often thought about changing my plan, but after hearing these new advancements they’re creating I might continue to stay. I will be greatly affected by this and I know others will too. Cell phones have already come such a long way and it is unbelievable that we have more technology coming our way. This advancement in technology will allow people to browse the web more easily, not loose service, and send texts a lot quicker. I am definitely a technology nerd and I cannot wait for this new 4G. It will be very interesting to see what cell phone service will have the better advancement. Soon one day we will not have computers anymore and we will have it all on our cell phones.

Article 9- 3/21/10

http://www.worldcorrespondents.com/computer-addiction-treatment-now-available/881801

The article I read this week is about how teenagers are addicted to the computer. When people say technology they automatically think about the computer. This article states that technology is not that great. People do not know how to discipline themselves when they use it. People spend many hours of the day playing computer games and using social networking sites, such as www.facebook.com , www.twitter.com, and www.myspace.com. These sites are used to stay connected with friends, but some depend on these three websites way too much. Dr. Richard Graham is trying to find a treatment for this disease called addiction. His program is 28 days and there are three stages for the program. The article states, “It begins with psychotherapy designed to address the patient’s issues with face-to-face relationships. The next stage is to unpick their relationship with technology and encourage them to switch it off, and finally they are encouraged to take part in both physical exercise and activities with family and friends.”

I think what Dr. Richard Graham is doing is great. Many teenagers today are so affected by social networking sites. They spend hours a day sitting in a chair looking at a computer when they could be getting exercise or hanging out with friends face-to-face. I believe that this program will affect people in many ways. It will help people cope with their addiction to the computer and it will help them meet more people in person. It will expand their horizons in different ways outside of the computer. I hope that the Internet does not go any further with social networking sites because then more people will get sucked into it. I believe it is best to meet people in person and keep a relationship outside of the computer screen. I hope Dr. Richard Graham’s program works very affectively.

Article 8- 3/7/10

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8544675.stm

This article is about PlayStation 3 and a bug that stopped gamers from using the online games network. There was a millennium-style bug that “had been caused by machines that had recognized the year 2010 and a leap year.” They told PS3 owners to not use their system until the technological problem was fixed. The PlayStation slim models did not experience this technological bug. The problem has been fixed and they stated that if there are any further problems that they can reset the date manually or online. This problem was also known as the Y2K bug. http://www.y2ktimebomb.com/ stated that the “Y2K bug was a clicking time bomb for all major computer applications. The computer and system application companies came out with year 2000 compliant operating systems and system software. IT companies around the world spent billions of dollars to go through their entire application source code to look for the Y2K bug and fix it.”

I believe that this millennium style bug only affected people who play on the PlayStation 3. I never heard of this problem until this article. I know that this could not have affected gamers that much because it is just a video game, but I know that they were probably going crazy. I feel as though the PlayStation Company should not be having these types of problems. Their system should be up to date and perfect with no problems. I myself was not affecting by this technology error, but I know that my brother was because he loves PlayStation 3. When he heard about his problem he immediately fixed his clock so he could continue playing. Its amazing how connected gamers get to their game system. If they are away from in for a couple hours they get depressed. I am glad that PlayStation was able to fix this error in their system.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100226/ap_on_hi_te/eu_britain_twitter;_ylt=AprMZZFdAN1hGNyejuu2WY8jtBAF;_ylu=X3oDMTJuMGdyZWUxBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAwMjI2L2V1X2JyaXRhaW5fdHdpdHRlcgRwb3MDMwRzZWMDeW5fYXJ0aWNsZV9zdW1tYXJ5X2xpc3QEc2xrA2Z1bGxuYnNwc3Rvcg--

This article is about Twitter scams that have been happening in London. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter states “Twitter is a free social networking and micro blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets.” The article states that hijackers hack into accounts and send sexually explicit messages to their followers. This type of hijacking is known as “phishing scams.” This is where the user is sent to a fake web site and they are to part with their password and then the hackers are able to log into their account and send sexual messages. This happened to Ed Miliband, the British energy minister. Another case also happened to Harriet Harman who is the House of Commons leader. Both said they would never send messages like this. It says that “Intel UK, the British arm of the chip maker, apologized to its followers.”

We all know that hackers are out there on the Internet, but I believe that technology should be ahead of them and should know how to prevent this. Twitter is such a popular website that it should not be having problems such as these. I believe this is going to impact Ed and Harriet in many ways. These messages that were sent by hackers could be taken seriously and they could lose their job. Many may not believe that this was a hacker. It would be horrible is they both lost their job because of a technology problem. If Twitter does not take hold of this problem it could affect many others, which would not be good. I think that Twitter should get on top of this problem right and way and make sure that these “phishing scams” do not occur anymore. Luckily I do not have a Twitter account, so this will not have an effect on me.

Article 6- 2/21/10

http://www.statesman.com/business/technology/blockbuster-fighting-back-with-new-technologies-265130.html

This article is about Blockbuster’s new technologies they are planning on using to save their company. Blockbuster has been losing money, having to layoff people, and has been having tough competition such as Netflix and Redbox. Their plan is to be able to watch videos over the Internet and connect that to TVs and cell phones. Also they want to be able to have customers download movies to a memory card so they can take it home and then watch it there. http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/Blockbuster-Inc-Company-History.html states “With approximately 27 percent of the U.S. market share, Blockbuster operates about 6,500 video stores, serving more than 87 million customers in the United States, its territories, and 25 other nations.” They don’t know how successful these new technology advances will be, but they are hoping it saves their company

I think that this technology advancement that Blockbuster is trying to pursue will have a huge impact on society as a whole. Our society loves to watch movies and Blockbuster is creating an easier way to watch and download movies. Obviously if Blockbuster shuts down many people will lose their job and this will affect many people. Many will have to find new jobs and be jobless for a while. I personally love renting movies and when I am out I will always stop at Blockbuster to pick up a movie, so I know if they get shut down that it will have a huge impact on me. I will have to resort to a Redbox, which I honestly don’t like as much because they do not have a huge selection. I think the memory card idea that Blockbuster is planning on using is a great idea. It will be easy and convenient for people. You won’t even have to leave the house to rent a movie.

Article 5- 2/14/10

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8484664.stm

This article is about privacy settings on Facebook. Many people are complaining that it is harder to make your Facebook private. Elizabeth Denham stated, “Some Facebook users are disappointed by certain changes being made to the site - changes that were supposed to strengthen their privacy and the protection of their personal information.” It states that once you make your privacy changes you much accept the change, but sometimes it would reverse on you.

I think that Facebook should have the technology to let people hide their Facebook if they want to. It should not have to be difficult. It should be something easy and efficient. I don not understand why a website this big should have a problem such as this. People that use Facebook are at fault as well because they are putting their information out on the web. If you go to this website (http://www.allfacebook.com/2008/05/the-facebook-stalking-tool/) it states that there is now a stalking tool on Facebook. It is an easy one, two, three step process. I find this absolutely crazy. It is weird to know that you can see who is constantly looking at your page. I feel as though this site should only be for saying hello to friends and looking at their updated pictures once in a while. This website has gone way to far. I used to cheer for a competitive team and I know that a girl on my team got stalked on Facebook and even further. He pretended he was someone else that she knew and wanted to meet up with her and she did and she was shocked and immediately left where she was. I think if Facebook would have a better privacy system then this could have been prevented. People should be able to make their website private if they want to.

Article 4- 2/7/10

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/02/07/league-acknowledges-testing-of-new-game-day-technology/

This weeks article ties in very well with what is happening now with the super bowl. The article explains that in Friday’s pre-Super Bowl press conference they stated that they are trying to create a new technology. The new device will be able to locate the players on the field and the balls location. They will do this by placing a camera in the ball that can detect if the ball crossed the line of it the player went out of bounds. They have been testing this new technology and it has not been released yet. The only con to this new technology is that fans might think that the game is fixed or rigged. I guess we will find out when the new technology is released.

I believe that this is a great idea for football. It would be an amazing step in technology. The referee’s would not have to make the decisions themselves. They could simply check the monitor and see. For instance this picture (http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/PHO/AAGU224-No26TDdive~Super-Bowl-XL-Willie-Parker-Touch-Down-Dive-Posters.jpg) might be hard to tell if a touchdown has been scored or not. This technology advancement will have an impact on football players, fans, coaches, referees, and many more. The impact could be great and could be bad. This could cause referees to lose their job because they will not have to call the shots anymore. It impacts players because they will have to be more precise about where their ball and foot placement is because there would be proof of it. Many fans will start rumors of the game being false or fixed. I personally believe that this advancement is huge. This would save time in the games and also eliminate arguing over the call. One last impact is that the ball size and weight could change because of the camera implant. They would have to make sure that the ball remains the same.

Article three- 1/31/10

http://news.mmosite.com/content/2010-01-29/mmo_on_an_apples_newest_ipad,1.shtml

This article is about Apple’s newest addition, which is the iPad. On the iPad you can go on the Internet, read e-books, and listen or watch videos and music. This is much different than an iPod because http://www.mariosalexandrou.com/definition/ipod.asp states, “An iPod is a palm-sized, electronic device primarily created to play music.” One of the huge benefits about this new tool is that it is made for MMO gamers. You are able to play games and become a bigger part of the gamming world. It has an “A4 chip processor with the GPU and I/o controllers all in one chip.” The iPad is touch screen and it able to have flipable pages so that you do not need to scroll and click with a mouse.

I personally believe that this new iPad is a bad addition to the Apple family. I think many gamers will love the opportunity to play their games on a hand held system. I think that this will affect society and individuals very much. Many guys love video games and consume their time with technology and sitting in front of a computer screen playing games. I believe that this iPad will cause many gamers to become even lazier than they already are. Don’t get me wrong I think this is a great step for Apple, but society has become very lazy because of technology and I believe this gives us another reason to become lazier. We already have video games, so I do not see the point in this new addition to technology. Apple already has an iPod, iPhone, Itouch, and many more. This new iPad is not much different except for gamers. I do not see this technology as an advancement. I see this as a step back and a chance for society to become lazier.

Article two-1/24/10

http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20100124/pope-encourages-his-priests-keep-technology-id-1098117.html

The article I found this week is about Pope Benedict XVI trying to spread the word about God. He is planning on doing this by having his priests get online and create blogs about God. Benedict believed that if they used every online tool to preach that they could reach many people about religion. Not only would they create blogs they wanted to post images, videos, websites, and much more. Pope Benedict XVI has noticed that Twitter is a growing site and that many important people are using it. He believes that Twitter will also be a great way to express their love for God. Many believe that Catholics lag in the multimedia word, so this way they are able to catch up with media. Benedict stated that being on the Internet “doesn't mean that (every priest) must open a blog or a Web site. It means that the church and the faithful must engage in this ministry in a digital world."

I strongly believe in what Pope Benedict XVI is doing. Many people in our society today have become lazy and have stopped attending church. This technology advance would give people the option to still believe and follow God online. http://www.asiamedia.ucla.edu/article.asp?parentid=80542 stated that the Internet “has seen the technological convergence of digital multimedia, information and communications. It has had an enormous impact on social activities as well as the academic and political circles.” I believe that this could impact society in a good or bad way. This could help people continue to follow the word of God. It could help by spreading the word of God online and the bible could be more accessible. One way this could be bad is that more people will stop going to church and reside to hearing Gods word online. All in all I feel this will help spread the word of God and hopefully this technology will not have a bad effect on the attendance in churches.

Article One

http://www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/2010/01/17/Disney-developing-technology-initiative/UPI-32571263746344/

This article is talking about how Disney World is trying to enhance visitor’s experience. They are planning to do this by working on a technology initiative. The technology they are planning on using is not stated because they do not want to release details yet. All we know is that they are using wireless-communication technology. http://www.javvin.com/wirelessmap.html states that wireless-communication technology is “A unique marketing tool for telecom and wireless hardware, software and services vendors for leads generation.” The technology project that Disney World has planned is supposed to cost roughly $1 billions to $1.5 billion. Nick Franklin is in charge of this project and because of this he has been given the title executive vice president of next generation experience.

This technology enhancement that Disney World is planning is going to effect society greatly. It is not going to make a huge impact on the world per say, but it will definitely enhance visitors experience in the park. Many young kids who have never visited Disney World will not know much of a difference, but many people, like my self will find these changes and notice that they make Disney World a more exciting place to be. Tasia Filippatos, who is a spokeswoman of Disney, stated, “"Our company has a long history of leveraging technology to enhance the experience of our guests, and we are constantly exploring new opportunities to build on that legacy." I am trying to figure out what Disney World is going to create with this technology to make it an even better place. I believe it is remarkable how people can come up with new technology to enhance a theme park that is already so technology filled. I am sure many people are going to be amazed by what they come up with. Many will be impacted and will want to return to Disney World once again. This technology plan is going to a dream to many and as we all know Disney World is the place where dreams come true.
